“To use one’s subordinates as one’s hands and feet”
Generally, this saying means to put excessive burdens on the subordinates only for their boss’s own profit with neglecting their will and health. He is a Monster. But is it true ?
As an amateur drummer, I can say that drumming is created nothing but by hands and feet. It’s all determined by how we can freely operate our hands and feet and how we can synchronously(or asynchronously on purpose) move them. Sometimes the thought comes across my mind, “If I would have to lose one of my hands or feet, which one should I choose?”. Unable to keep beats on hi hat without the right hand. Unable to hit back beats without the left hand. Unable to kick bass drum without the right foot. So is it ok without the left foot ?…No, can’t close the hi hat…so then eventually I always feel a little sad and say to myself “Must cherish my hands and feet”.
Whether you’re a drummer or not, is there any other thing more important than your hands and feet for you ? If you can feel your subordinates just as your own hands and feet and can move them freely, the only reason is that you cherish your men just like your own hands and feet, isn’t it ? Only such a boss has ability and right to produce good results with them and to share the pleasure among them, doesn’t he ?
So, we should use our subordinates as our hands and feet.
「部下を手足のように使う」
一般的には、部下の意志や健康を無視し、自らの利益の為のみに、部下に過度な負担をかける事を意味する。極悪人である。しかし、果たして、本当にそうだろうか？
私はアマチュアドラマーであるが、ドラミングは正に手足によって産み出される。如何に手足を思い通りに、同期させて(或いは意図的に非同期に)動かすかが全てである。時々、ふと、もしも手足をどれか一本失わねばならないとしたら、どれにしようか？と自問する事がある。右手が無いとハイハットが刻めない。左手が無いとバックビートが叩けない。右脚が無いとバスドラをキックできない。左脚ならいいか？…いや、ハイハットがクローズできない…。そして、何だか切なくなって、いつも最後には「手足は大事にしよう」と思う。
ドラマーか否かを問わず、人にとって自分の手足ほど大切なものが他にあるだろうか。自分の部下を自分の手足同様に大切に想うからこそ、部下を手足として感じる事ができ、彼らを自在に動かせるのではないだろうか。部下と共に成果を上げ、喜びを分かち合う資質と資格があるのは、そういう上司だけではないだろうか。
部下は手足のように使うべきである。
